Chennai was formerly known, as Madras is the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Cost off the Bay of Bengal, it is the biggest industrial and commercial centre in South India and a major cultural, economic and educational centre. Chennai is known as the “Medical Capital of India” as the country’s leading hospitals, Clinicians and Medical Colleges are all located here. The city is also called as the “Detroit of India” for its thriving automobile industry. The city is 375 years old and has a very rich and diversified history.

The city had 8.6 million residents, making it the fourth most populous city in India. The urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, is home to approximately 8.9 million, making it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the country and 31st largest urban area in the world.

The city is host to the third largest expatriate population in India after Mumbai and Delhi with well over 100000. Chennai is the only city in South Asia and India to figure in the “52 places to go around the world” by The New York Times.


Chennai has a tropical wet and dry climate. The hottest part of the year is late April to early June, with maximum temperatures around 35~40 °C (95~104°F). The coolest part of the year is December & January, with minimum temperatures around 15~22°C (59~72 °F). The city gets most of its seasonal rainfall from the north–east monsoon winds, from mid”October to mid” December.

Law & Order

The city is a very peace and fun loving place. There are hardly any Law & Order issues. The local police are very efficient and are very friendly. There are reported incidents of petty thefts.

Food & Night Life

Being a cosmopolitan city it offers a wide range of global cuisine. The night life in Chennai is fun in the week ends which most of the people hitting one of the resorts located in the scenic East Cost Road leading up to the old French Colony Pondicherry.


With temples, beaches and centres of historical and cultural significance, including the UNESCO Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, Chennai remains the most visited city in India. Chennai has been the most visited Indian city since 2008, in terms of foreign tourists arrival. The city serves as the gateway to the southern part of India with tourists landing in the city and starting their trip to the rest of the region. Top foreign nationals visiting the city include those from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore, followed by the United Kingdom, France and the United States. Currently, the city has over 30 luxury hotels in the five-star and five-star deluxe categories, with over 6000 rooms in the inventory.
